Visiting the Arenillas Waterfalls in El Oro, Ecuador: Full Travel Guide

The names El Oro or Arenillas, when mentioned in connection with southern Ecuador, usually bring to mind coastal beaches or busy border towns. Few people realize that, as you leave Arenillas' concrete jungle behind and begin to ascend from the coastal plains into the verdant foothills of the Cordillera Dumarí, you will find a hidden natural paradise within the Province of El Oro.

Waterfall in Arennillas

The river’s highlight is Cascada El Blanco, a spectacular waterfall powered by mountain springs that run from higher in the region. As the river flows over rocky channels, it drops 15 meters down a steep stone wall into a lush green basin. The pool beneath is large, clean, and incredibly cool, a perfect respite from the hot coastal temperatures. These springs have a reputation among locals for being healing waters, and I can’t blame them. If you’ve ever relaxed along the river rocks, warmed by the sun, and watched parrots flit between palm fronds, then you know that such water must be magic!

Cascada El Blanco is easy to reach. It is located roughly twenty to twenty-five kilometers southeast of downtown Arenillas towards the Tahuín Reservoir, via Las Lajas country roads. From the heart of Arenillas, a local cab will take you there, or you can take a rural bus that goes to Las Mercedes, or Voluntad de Dios. From the access point, there is a small, well-marked nature trail that leads directly to the falls, along the banks of the river. This is a slow-paced, laid-back environment. People come here to enjoy long dips under the cascading water, to use the waterfall’s force to massage their muscles, or simply to hang out at one of the eco-campsites or cabins near the falls. And since the falls are located close to the huge Tahuin reservoir, it is easy to turn your morning dip into a daylong outing that includes an afternoon boat ride or a viewing platform overlooking the lake. A few practical tips will ensure your trip runs smoothly:

Footwear & Gear :  Bring good water shoes or hiking sandals that have good traction because the rocks in the river and underwater shelves are very slippery. Bring a waterproof dry bag for your camera and other electronic equipment, along with reef-safe sunscreen and bug spray.

Timing & Logistics: Weekday mornings are best for a visit if you want to use the pools with few other people around, before family visitors flood the area during the weekends, and bring some US$ bills for rural buses, site admission, and roadside refreshments.

No trip into the Arenillas backcountry is complete without enjoying the local food culture. After spending the day by the water, head back into town along the main avenues to sample classic coastal comfort dishes. Freshly made tigrillo—mashed green plantains mixed with cheese and crispy pork—along with steamed humitas make the perfect hearty recovery meal, especially when paired with a cup of rich hot chocolate brewed from locally grown Ecuadorian cacao.

Whether you are exploring southern Ecuador on a broader road trip or simply craving a tranquil day off the beaten path, the cool cascades of Arenillas offer a secluded, refreshing slice of nature waiting to be discovered.
