 There is a quiet magic in the places where the American continent dissolves into the sea. Across thousands of miles of the shores of the United States form a vast, living gallery of light, shadow, texture, and color. From the sugar-white sands to moody Pacific sea stacks. Shrouded in mist, these landscapes offer an ethereal escape from the everyday world.

The Tropical Dreamscapes of Hawaii

​Lanikai Beach, Oahu

Lanikai Beach, Oahu

Nestled along Oahu’s windward coast, Lanikai Beach, which translates to “heavenly ocean” in Hawaiian, is an absolute dream. It’s easy to pretend Lanikai’s shore is an actual postcard as the different shades of blue we’re all jealous of, are tastefully arranged in the perfect stretch of ocean. and the sand is a powdery velvet, a bright and cream-colored distraction to the sun.

The bay’s mirror-like water is crystal clear and calm, courtesy of the reef. The Mokulua Islands, two of Hawaii’s jagged yet gem-like islets, add a dramatic touch to the silent horizon. A quick, yet lucid view of the coast in the early morning hours shows a captivating change of gradients happening in the ocean. The shoreline’s mint is a shallow contrast to the depths’ luma sapphire.

Ke’e Beach, Kauai

Visiting Ke’e Beach is a great opportunity to view Na Pali cliffs as you hike through lush, volcanic Kauai. Kauai is known for its wild beauty and cinematic landscapes. Ke’e beach is an ideal blend of rough beauty and the serenity of a golden beach as you witness the Na Pali cliffs rumble into the coral reef.

You can sense the agelessness of the beach as the mist from the ocean line the shores. The warm ethereal glow that the cove receives from the sun immerses the entire scene in an enchanting atmosphere. Calm tide pools are formed under the outer coral reefs and are disturbed only by white waves crashing along the beach and the cliffs elongating their shadows across the shore.

Pure Radiance Along the Gulf and Atlantic

Siesta Key, Florida

Siesta Key is on Florida’s Gulf Coast and has a beautiful color palette like nowhere else. Its beach is made of super fine sand that is made of blown pure quartz that has come from the Appalachian Mountains. This quartz sand is so white and fine that it looks like powdered sugar, but remains sand and stays cool under the burning sun.

Siesta Key is a minimalist’s paradise. The sand and the sea are turquoise and mint with gentle mirroring ripples. The pureness of the sand and the color and clarity of the water is unlike anywhere else. When the Sun dips below the horizon, the sand takes on the color of the sunset which can be pink, lilac, or peach, while the Gulf reflect this brilliant light.

​Driftwood Beach, Jekyll Island

Located on the coast of Georgia, Driftwood Beach is a ghostly, sculptural wonderland formed by nature. This atmospheric and melancholy beach is covered in bleached and weathered logs of dead oak and pine trees left behind by the salt water and tides for many years. The twisted roots and trunks create skeletal shapes that contrast sharply against the ocean horizon. Walking along the beach at sunrise creates a strange, beautiful illusion where the early morning sunlight stretches dark shadows through the log formations. It feels less like a beach and more like an outdoor sculpture garden.

Moody Drama in the Pacific Northwest

Cannon Beach, Oregon

As we move up the North Pacific coastline, the scene transitions from light to shadow. Cannon Beach on the Oregon coast captures the wild, prehistoric energy of the region. Long stretches of wet, black sand reflect the sky like a dark mirror. A towering basalt sea stack as Haystack Rock rises 235 feet from the ocean. Coastal fog drifts low over the beach, giving the sea stacks a dreamy, ethereal look. When the sun goes down on a clear evening, the sky bursts into deep hues of purple, orange, and slate, making the sea stacks appear dark against the burning sky

​Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park, Washington

Head further up the coast in Washington state, and Ruby Beach has a very different vibe, being more untamed and rugged. As you walk through the temperate rainforest, you'll find a black gravel beach named after small garnets embedded in the rocks. Driftwood logs form massive heaps on the high tide mark, while the crashing surf and sea stacks add to the dramatic scenery

​El Matador State Beach, Malibu

Southern California is famous for its ocean light, and one of my favorite spots to capture it is El Matador State Beach in Malibu. Nestled below the sandstone cliffs, this tiny pocket beach is surrounded by sea stacks, natural arches, and sandstone monoliths. As the sun begins to set, the light shifts to a soft amber color that perfectly captures El Matador’s features. Sunlight flows through the stone arches while illuminating tide pools and reflecting back from rocks on the beach. Crashing surf reverberates through the rock caverns as the last rays of sunlight reflect on the water and spray.
